Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over the age of 60. In most cases, age-related macular degeneration is not a blinding disease, but it can cause significant vision loss. The tissue affected is the retina – nerve tissue at the back of the eye, and the affected area is the macula, the center of vision.
Behind the iris (the colored layer of the eye) is a layer of cells that produce a fluid called aqueous humor. The fluid passes through a hole in the center of the iris (pupil) to drain into tiny drainage tubes located in the angle formed between the cornea (the outer layer of the eye) and the iris. Normally, there is a balance between the fluid entering and leaving, but if there is an overproduction of fluid or a drainage problem, the intraocular pressure will increase. This condition causes damage to the optic nerve fibers and impairs vision.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body cannot store sugar in the body's cells. This condition can cause many health problems. Too much sugar that stays in the blood and does not enter the cells can cause damage to blood vessels throughout the body, including the blood vessels in the eye. Many people are diagnosed with diabetes every day, and one of the common damages from the disease is Retinopathy Diabetic. This is an eye condition that results from damage to the blood system in the retina.
