There is a wide range of optical solutions for reading. When the visual impairment is not severe, both eyes can be involved and glasses up to 16+ diopters can be given to create magnification on the retina.
Thanks to the special structure of the glasses, despite the high prescription, the eyes manage to perform the operation with minimal fatigue of the visual system.
If necessary, glasses with a power of X2-X8 can be given. At this stage, the patient switches from glasses with a regular prescription to magnification.
A reading solution with built-in light – Many studies have shown the connection between reading ability and the intensity and type of lighting.
Most retinal diseases, except those that cause photophobia and increased glare, require increased lighting in order to read comfortably.
Over the years, there have been attempts to incorporate lighting into the glasses themselves. Thanks to the LED lighting that is widespread today, glasses with powerful LED lights have been invented. This allows for the combination of any prescription, including magnifying and microscopic lenses if necessary.
There is a wide variety of magnifying glasses for vision, in different magnifications. Some of them incorporate built-in lighting. Some stand on the text. Others, you have to hold in your hand and aim at the appropriate distance from the text.
A magnifying glass is suitable for patients who feel uncomfortable holding the text close to their eyes or are not interested in an electronic device.
The electronic device is a CCTV (Closed Circuit Television). A camera is placed above the text and enlarges it. In addition to enlarging the text, backgrounds can be changed and various diseases can be alleviated by increasing the contrast.
There are small, portable devices and there are large desktop screens that allow for higher magnification.
There may be several reasons why an electronic solution would be chosen. Electronic systems sometimes provide much stronger magnification than optical systems. Therefore, they are suitable for those with severe visual impairment.
Sometimes it is simply a matter of convenience or due to a physical problem other than vision that makes it difficult for the patient to hold reading material in their hand for long periods of time. Therefore, an electronic reading system is recommended.
Glasses that allow work from an intermediate distance, for example, a computer, reading from a relatively large distance, and more.
The advantage is a relatively large working distance compared to other reading accessories.
The disadvantage of a telemicroscope is a limited field of view.
In order to achieve an accurate fit for each patient's needs, a unique eye exam must be performed by an optometrist for low vision.
