The Amsler chart is a simple but important tool for the early detection of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
This is a self-examination done at home and aims to identify visual distortions that may indicate damage to the macula - the area responsible for sharp vision in the center of the retina.
Why is Amsler Grid important?
- Early detection – Wet retinal degeneration progresses rapidly and it is important to identify it as early as possible to prevent irreversible vision loss.
- Frequent monitoring – People at risk (such as those over the age of fifty or those with a family history) can check for changes in vision regularly.
- Distortion detection – The appearance of wavy lines, dark spots, or blurry areas in the chart may indicate fluid buildup or capillary blood leakage in the macula of the retina, a characteristic sign of wet AMD.
- Doctor's instructions – An abnormal test result requires immediate contact with an ophthalmologist who can diagnose the condition and begin treatment.
